From's Gambit

Orchestral and 'classical' music has always been a part of Paul M. Grove's musical life. This was the music most loved by his father Roy, and that enthusiasm influenced Paul forever. Classical piano lessons became the starting point for his entry into music as a participant, and later forays into synthesizers, rock music, and other instruments never lessened the fascination and attachment to the tones and colors of orchestral instruments and the spaces in which they play.

FortunityPaul M. Grove

Says Paul:

"Fortunity" started as an experiment in composition. I made a numbered list of several factors that frame music, such as key (A-G), accidentals (sharp, flat, natural), and modes. I then used a random number generator to 'write' the framework of the piece. The result was the keys of:

    E Locrian

    D Mixolydian

    F Major (Ionian)

    C# Mixolydian

    E♭ Dorian

Following this basic structure I composed "Fortunity", letting randomness and arbitrary key changes be mixed into a coherent whole.

Ascending the Clark ForkPaul M. Grove
00:00 / 05:38

Says Paul:

The Clark Fork in Montana is a gorgeous, wild river with many moods running through my beautiful state. This is a tribute to this moving water.

There is a clash of movement here, with the arpeggio descending while the chordal motion tends upward. This, to me, is like going upriver. You are moving upstream but the water around you is always pushing you back; motion over motion. The end is pure bliss, to me the sound of water dripping and cascading from high, pure glaciers.

Comic FancyPaul M. Grove
00:00 / 03:34

Says Paul:

Comic Fancy started as a lighthearted piece of music intended for my music library. It felt somewhat like music for animation, something fun and playful with quick mood changes going from part A to B, back to A. I stopped there for the library music submission, but felt there was more places to go, more that needed to be said. So I followed that muse through more feelings and tones, eventually returning to the original theme to complete the musical journey.

These sounds invoke an esthetic that no other assemblage can match, and they inspired Paul's second foray into orchestral music with his new album From's Gambit. Many moods are explored within this framework, from fun and quirky to ethereal and somber, from angular and slightly dissonant to tranquil and understated.
