Little Piano Sketches

~Book 2~

pianosketches2take2.jpg

Introducing Book 2 of Paul's Little Piano Sketches series, a continuation of graceful and moody piano performances from his studio in NW Montana.

"This is certainly a sister to Book 1, and as a sibling you can expect both similarities as well as contrast," says Paul of this new creation. "Here things are a bit stormier, sometimes a bit darker. Hands touch piano, and what happens is, in some ways, not completely up to me, to my consciousness. Flow, colored by the experiences of my day, my life, contoured by my skills and clumsiness, combine to be what drips on the page."

Eleven more short piano solos are here for your perusal and enjoyment. Intimate performances, each is unique and original, with the exception of a dual piece by Aram Khachaturian, a composer whose work influenced Paul as a young student.

"I included these two short Khachaturian pieces because they were very important to me as I was first learning composition; they are so free in their approach to keys and chordal structure, it 'allowed' me to open myself to breaking rules."

Too Complex for Words- This song flew from me on what would have been my father's 84th birthday. Such a jumble of feelings all mixed together: the longing for more, the appreciation of the person I got to know, anger at his loss, the tenderness of his fatherhood. How could I express this in words? I cannot. And he would have understood this language of Music more than most.

Blacial Denting- The name of this song came from a dream, a not uncommon source of names and sometimes ideas for songs. In my dream my friend Joel was telling me that the lead singer/bass player from the band King's X was named Blacial Denting. No, it's Doug Pinnick whom we both met at a NAMM show 20 years ago. Soon to come, the full jazz band version of this song!

Io Che- The name translates to I Whom (or something close to that). This is the last song I composed for this album and I think best encompasses the various moods of Book II.
