Combining my love of nature with my love of recording, and with the encouragement of my friend Rick, I have started making field recordings from around my home in Montana. I am looking forward to increasing this collection as it is great fun to explore nature with my eyes closed! Soon to come (I hope) will be some wolf howls. We only hear them occasionally but I hope to capture a good bout of singing one of these nights. With spring here I expect to get lots of birdsong as well, in their full mating and territory-battle glory.

I am using a Tascam DR-40, recording at 24bit 48kHz and editing the sound files in ProTools. So far I have been using the internal microphones in A/B configuration. I usually use a McDSP HPF to roll off the rumble of wind noise, with some limiting also from McDSP to get the signal level much hotter. I bounce to MP3 at 24 bit, but of course have the original files at full resolution.
