From the beating heart of audio wizardry in NW Montana comes the dark tale of The Pulvermacher, an ominous and mystifying outing of the Neo-progressive kind. The Pulvermacher examines a darker shade of instrumental music, from mystifying acoustics to menacing explosions of sound. Here you can expect the unconventional and inexplicable, and maybe even have some fun on the ride. Don't be afraid to tap your foot.

With special guest guitarist Joel Steven, Paul delves deep into the dusty corners of his keyboard, synth, and guitar archives to construct sonic wonderlands and entirely new nations of rhythmic appeal.

Says Paul, "Although much of The Pulvermacher is dark, and some is quite heavy, there is a flow to this album, ups and downs, sparsity and density, to give a whole story. There are grooves in there, too, and moments of light to lend contrast and offer an island of respite. Just open your mind and explore where the music takes you."

Notes on The Pulvermacher:

(Pulvermacher- maker of gunpowder or an apothecary making medicinal powders)

1. Basic Neem- Neem is a plant whose oil is often used as an insect repellent. The song seems a little spookier than that.

2. My Enemies Are Legion- Have you ever felt this way? The World is against me. And then there is some hope.

3. Hoobed- I purchased a halloween costume that included  a hooded robe but the label misspelled it 'hoobed' which cracked me up, became part of my vernacular ever since. Be sure to listen more than halfway through this song, it gets very sonically interesting.

4. The Fever- Another song that is a full sonic journey, timbres and grooves meld together.

5. Mumia Vapors- Incredibly, mumia refers to the 'medicinal' use of ground up mummies for almost 8 centuries in Europe. This complex song matches that vibe.

6. Joyas Voladoras (Flying Jewels)- Spanish for hummingbirds, our magical little flying friends here in North America (and South America). Every spring we look forward to the first visits from these ethereal creatures. Thanks to Joel Steven for the cool guitars!

7. Hogarth the Betrayer- Not related to the artist William Hogarth, I just like the name and wrote a musical piece to describe a fictional villain.

8. Midnight Perspective- A moment's reflection in an otherwise somewhat truculent album.

9. Cadastral One- In defiance of the simple squares of a cadastral map, this song is written in 5/4 timing, mostly.

10. Kugelfest- The word means bulletproof. Counter melodies work in parity creating a complex voice. Watch that sudden change to major near the middle, but don't let if fool you.

11. Jacoraveneau- I think this name came to me in a dream. Its somewhat comic, but dark sound fits the song well.

12. Clock is Ticking- This started as a short piece of music for a music library used in TV and movies but it was interesting to me sonically so I expanded it into a whole song. There is a strong visual element that comes with this piece.

13. Edeke- A god of calamity and disease in the Teso language. I think you'll agree this music sounds like that.

14. Coxcomb- A man of much conceit. This man toots his own horn. But maybe, about 1/3 of the way through, he finds a little self-reflection.

15. Ne'erdowell- How often does he do well? Ne'er, my friend. But the song starts a good groove about 1/3 of the way through so hang tight, and finally into a lovely and sad ending.

16. The Tripwreck- A trippy play on a shipwreck. Listen with headphones and go on a trip.

17. Onus Probandi- The Burden of Proof. This song proves that Joel Steven is a great guitar player. A fit final piece for the album.
